CAC African Cycling Championships Drive Kisumu Business Boom as County Targets KSh 80 Million

KISUMU, Kenya — The 2026 CAC African Road Cycling Championships are injecting fresh momentum into Kisumu’s economy, boosting business for local traders, hotels, restaurants and transport operators as the county government targets more than KSh 80 million in revenue and visitor spending from the five-day continental event.
With more than 340 cyclists from over 30 African countries, alongside team officials, media and spectators, converging on the lakeside city, the championships are generating increased demand for accommodation, transport and local cuisine. Food vendors report brisk sales, with fresh fish from Lake Victoria among the popular choices for visiting teams and spectators.
For small-scale traders, the influx of visitors has translated into valuable business opportunities. One food vendor described the championships as a significant boost to daily sales, highlighting strong demand for fish dishes.
Transport operators, including taxi and motorcycle taxi providers, are also benefiting from increased movement around the city as teams and visitors travel between accommodation facilities, competition venues and tourist attractions.
Beyond the immediate commercial gains, the championships are providing an opportunity to showcase Kisumu's tourism potential. Visitors have highlighted the city's distinctive landscapes and proximity to Lake Victoria, reinforcing its appeal as a destination for sports tourism and leisure travel.
The Kisumu County Government expects the event to generate more than KSh 80 million in economic activity. According to county officials, previous editions generated approximately KSh 80 million in direct visitor spending, with expectations that the current championships could surpass that figure.
The county has also highlighted its marketing efforts to attract visitors and position Kisumu as a destination for future sporting events. Officials hope the championships will strengthen the city's profile within Africa's growing sports tourism circuit.
From hotels and restaurants to transport operators and small businesses, the economic benefits demonstrate how major sporting events can support local livelihoods while promoting tourism.
The 2026 CAC African Road Cycling Championships run from 21–25 October in Kisumu, bringing together Africa's leading cyclists while showcasing the economic potential of sports tourism in Kenya.
